A local company that also moves you long distance
Desert Moving is a long-distance moving company for households leaving the Coachella Valley, or arriving in it. Most of our work is local, and we'd rather say so up front: long-distance moves are a smaller part of what we do, and they run through our agency with Wheaton World Wide Moving.
What that means for you is one company you can actually visit. The survey, the written estimate and the packing start here, at 82-585 Showcase Parkway A101 in Indio, with people who have been moving desert households since 1987. You're not handed to a broker who sells your move to a company you've never spoken to.
If you're moving within the valley instead, see our local movers page.
How it works
How a long-distance move works
More planning than a local move, and fewer surprises because of it.

- 01
Survey and written estimate
We look at what's moving, at your home or on a video call, and ask about access at both ends. Then you get a written estimate before anything is booked.
- 02
Packing and inventory
Furniture is wrapped for a long trip, boxes are packed and labeled, and your belongings are listed on an inventory before they leave the house.
- 03
Pickup and delivery dates
Long-distance moves are scheduled differently from local ones. We agree the loading date with you and explain the delivery window when you book, before moving day.
- 04
Storage if the dates don't meet
If you have to be out before the new place is ready, your things can wait in our facility and travel when you're ready.
Moving out of the Coachella Valley
People leave the valley for all sorts of reasons: a job, family, a sale of a second home, or a move back after years of desert winters. Some take the whole house; others send a few pieces of furniture to family out of state.
Wherever you live now, the move starts close to home. We regularly work in Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta and Palm Springs, and our crews and warehouse are in Indio. Gated communities often set move hours at the old address too, so check with your HOA before you pick a loading date.
Not every long-distance move is a whole house
Sometimes it's a few pieces of furniture going to a daughter's new home, or the contents of a seasonal condo heading back to a main residence. Tell us exactly what's going when you ask for a quote. The size of the load changes how it's priced and scheduled.
Packing for a long trip
A long haul is harder on boxes than a drive across town. If you'd rather not pack yourself, our crew can pack everything or just the fragile rooms, using our materials and labeling each box by room. See full-service packing. For planning ahead, our guide to the best way to move across country walks through the options.
Moving to the Coachella Valley
If you're coming to the desert from somewhere else, tell us where you're moving from and where you're moving to when you ask for a quote. Moving from Los Angeles is common enough that our Palm Springs moving page covers it, and our guide on how to move to Palm Springs helps with the rest.
Two things newcomers don't always expect: summer heat, which makes an early start worth asking for from June through September, and HOA rules, which may set move-in hours and truck parking at your new community. Still choosing a town? Our list of affordable places to live in California is a starting point.
Storage in between
When the move-out and move-in dates don't match
Long-distance moves rarely line up perfectly. A sale closes early, a purchase closes late, or the new place needs work first. Your belongings can go into sealed wooden vaults in our warehouse in Indio until the new home is ready.
A vault is about 7½ × 6½ × 5½ ft, and our crew does the loading. Need something while it's stored? Call ahead and we'll arrange it. We store cars as well.

Long-distance moves, on Google
Everyone was so professional, knowledgeable, patient and kind. The movers were quick, efficient and careful. They went straight to work and didn't waste any time getting the job done. The move went off perfectly and I would highly recommend Desert Moving Company to anyone, whether across town or across the country. Thank you DMC!
Both the planning and execution of this move were exceptional experiences. All of the people involved demonstrated good customer service and were quick to make suggestions about ways to make the experience even better. The move was completed in a timely fashion and there were no complications. More importantly, there was no damage to any of my belongings.
I would recommend Desert Moving and Storage, Wheaton Van Lines, to anyone who needs a reliable moving company.

FAQ
Long-distance moving questions
Every long-distance move is different. Call (760) 200-9494 to talk yours through.
How expensive is long-distance moving?
It depends mainly on how much you're moving and how far it's going, then on packing, storage and access at each end. Because every move is different, we don't quote from a room count. We survey the move first and give you a written estimate before anything is booked.
How long does a long-distance move take?
It depends on the distance and on how the move is scheduled, so we don't promise a delivery time before we've planned it. When you book, we agree the loading date with you and explain the delivery window for your move. If you need to be out sooner, storage can bridge the gap.
Are you a moving broker?
No. We're a family-owned moving company based in Indio and an agent for Wheaton World Wide Moving. The survey, estimate and packing are handled by our own staff from our office on 82-585 Showcase Parkway A101, not passed to a company you haven't met. You can call or visit us before you decide.
Can you store my things before delivery?
Yes. If your new home isn't ready, your belongings go into sealed wooden vaults at our facility in Indio. They wait there until you're ready for delivery. If you need something from your vault in the meantime, call ahead and we'll arrange access.
Can you move just a few pieces of furniture out of state?
Yes. Not every long-distance move is a full house. Customers have used us to send some furniture to family in another state. Tell us exactly what's going, and where, when you ask for a quote, because a smaller load is priced and scheduled differently.
Do you move people into the Coachella Valley?
Yes. Tell us where you're moving from and your new address in the valley when you request a quote, and we'll explain how the move would work. Once you've arrived, we can also hold belongings in storage until your new home is ready.
