Is climate-controlled storage worth it?

In the Coachella Valley, usually yes, if you are storing furniture, electronics, photos, artwork or anything made of wood for more than a few weeks. Average summer highs in Palm Springs are 108°F in July and August (NOAA 1991–2020 normals), and a closed garage, shed or container sits in that heat all day.

Heat is hard on the things people care most about keeping: glued joints and veneers on wood furniture, leather, mattresses, vinyl records, photographs, and anything with a battery or a circuit board. A few days in a hot garage rarely matters. A whole summer often does.

It is not always necessary. If your things go straight from one house to the next on the same day, you don't need storage at all. And patio furniture, garden tools or plastic bins of holiday decorations cope with heat well enough on their own. The honest test is simple: how long, and how much would it cost to replace?

The vault

What a wooden vault actually is

A vault is a sealed wooden crate about 7½ feet long, 6½ feet wide and 5½ feet high, roughly 268 cubic feet. Your furniture and boxes are loaded into it and it is closed up, then stacked in our warehouse in Indio.

Your things stay inside their own vault, kept apart from everyone else's, from the day they are loaded until the day they come back out. Nobody moves individual pieces around the building, and you never share a room with another customer's belongings.

How many vaults you need depends on what you are storing. Whoever gives your estimate counts it with you, so the number is settled before moving day.

Who uses household storage

Most of our household storage starts with a move that doesn't line up. A closing date moves, a new build runs late, or a remodel needs the house empty. Some customers sell a home while living out of state and see their furniture again only when it arrives at the new place.

Part-time residents use it to close up a desert house for the summer, and families downsizing use it to hold furniture they aren't ready to part with.

Typical vault contents are what you would expect from a home: mattresses, sofas, dressers and nightstands, recliners, televisions, coffee tables and lamps, boxes of papers and documents, and family keepsakes. If you have a piano, artwork or an antique, mention it when you ask for a quote so it is wrapped for the time it will spend in storage.

Storing a car at the same time? We have indoor car storage too, and it can be arranged on the same call.

One company

The movers and the storage are the same people

Because we pack, move and store, nothing changes hands between companies. The furniture that leaves your house is wrapped once, loaded once and delivered by the same business that stored it. There's no rental truck and no second set of movers to book at the other end.

If you'd rather not pack yourself, full-service packing covers the boxes too. For the moving side, see local movers, or go back to all storage services.

From customers who stored with us

Desert Moving Company handled my relocation, which included 7 months of storage, without incident. The furniture was well protected and delivered in a timely manner. All items where inventoried and accounted for. Their pricing was fair and a good value for the service provided. I would use them again and certainly recommend them.

If anyone has experienced moving before nothing is easy. From start to finish something comes up and you need to adjust your plan. I needed a climate control storage facility for approx 5,000 sq. ft.of furniture. When selling a home your closing date is a moving target. One day you sell then next week it falls out or there’s a delay. Desert Moving was right there for you. Just knowing they would be there when needed, made the stress level simple. They’re very competitive, showed up on time, listened and adjusted to your needs. You should call them!!! They’re wonderful to work with!!!

Is climate-controlled storage worth it for furniture?

For wood, upholstered or leather furniture stored more than a few weeks in the desert, yes. Palm Springs averages 108°F highs in July and August, and heat loosens glue, dries out wood and damages fabric. For a same-day move, or for patio furniture and plastic bins, it usually isn't worth paying for.

Is climate-controlled storage necessary in a dry climate?

Dry air doesn't protect furniture from heat. In the Coachella Valley the risk is temperature, not damp: months of summer heat can warp wood, crack finishes and shorten the life of electronics and batteries. The longer the storage and the more valuable the item, the more climate control matters.

How big is a storage vault?

About 7½ feet long, 6½ feet wide and 5½ feet high, or roughly 268 cubic feet. A full household often needs more than one. How many you need depends on the furniture and boxes, and it is worked out with you when we give your written estimate.

Can I get something out of my vault while it is in storage?

Yes. Call ahead and tell us what you need. Your vault stays sealed and handled only by staff inside the facility, so we need notice to get it out and ready, or to schedule a delivery. There is no walk-in access.

How long can I keep furniture in storage?

As long as you need. Our reviews include customers who stored for four months while a new home was finished, seven months during a relocation, and more than a year with a piano. Tell us your likely date when you ask for a quote.

Do I have to pack everything myself?

No. The crew wraps furniture as standard, and we can pack the boxes too if you would like. Tell us when you ask for a quote whether you want full packing, or only help with fragile things such as glassware, artwork and electronics.
