Knowing what you get for moving insurance through your transition is one of the first things you should ask when choosing a moving company, because after all your putting the trust of your personal belongings in the hands others you don’t know to well. With a great reputation and high repeat customer moves, Desert Moving Company & Storage helps you sleep better at night come move day. Here is a set of insurance options to choose from to give you a better idea of what fits your personal requirement’s for you upcoming relocation.

Option One – Basic Liability

Inventoried items will be covered at minimum liability, which is .60 per pound per article. To give you a better understanding of what that means is lets say you have a coffee table that is 200lbs and is valued at $5,000. If you just choose the basis insurance and say the coffee table is damaged or lost, then based on the coverage you have through the moving company they would take .60 and multiply it by the weight of the coffee table 200lbs. The replacement value you would most collect is $120.00.  This would not make you feel good if the coffee table was worth $5,000. Note: Weight is determined by the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) Table of Weights. The good thing is you have Desert Moving Company & Storage and over the past 23 years in business, we’ve managed to not have to file one claim. I guess you can say where pretty careful.  Here are some other options, just in case.

Option two – Added insurance (Purchase)

Ÿ   Deductable: All Desert Moving Company & Storage insurance policies have a min $500

Deductible.

Ÿ    Cost: The cost of insurance is $10 for every $1,000 of declared value.

✔   This insurance policy covers the inventory only.

✔   The insurance policy is not an itemized policy.

✔   The policy is based on the actual cash value of your entire

Inventoried shipment.

NOTE: Before buying insurance, find out how much your belongings are worth and then purchase accordingly. This will give you a better feeling that all your goods are covered at the total replacement value claimed on the bill of lading. If you underinsure your shipment, you will be subject to a co-insurance penalty that is gone through the Moving Companies insurance policy.  Here is an example, if your claim your shipment to be worth $50,000 and you only purchase $25,000, then the policy will only be responsible for 50% of losses/damages insured.

Choose between the following two insurance options:

Actual Cash Value (ACV):

Your property is insured for its actual cash value, after depreciation, based on the AMSA Depreciation Guide. You will be paid the lesser of the following, according to our assessment:

  • The actual cash value at time of loss or damage, after depreciation.
  • The amount of repairing or replacing the property (according to our estimates).
  • The limit of coverage.

Replacement Cost (RC):

Your property is insured for replacement cost. (Please note: in order to receive full replacement cost for an item, it must be damaged beyond repair or confirmed as lost).
You will be paid the lesser of the following, according to our assessment:

  • The amount of repairing the damage (according to our estimates).
  • The amount it would cost to replace the destroyed or lost property with similar kind or quality to be used for the same purpose and same site (according to our estimates).
  • The limit of coverage.

What is not covered:

Loss or damage to jewelry, gem stones, cash, stamps, coin or currency, bank notes, travelers checks, deeds, letters or valuable papers of any kind, coin or stamp collections, photo albums, scrapbooks, negotiable items, perishable articles, firearms, ammunition or contraband.

  • Damage to furniture made from pressboard and/or particleboard.
  • Loss or damage consisting of breakage of china, glassware, bottles, statuary, bric-a-brac, or other similar articles of a brittle nature unless property has been packed by the carrier. The carrier is not responsible for the content of boxes packed by the owner.
  • Pairs & Sets: The policy covers only the cost or repair of an individual item damaged, regardless if the item is part of a pair or a set.

Tax, shipping and handling charges.

When you make that move from home to a new locality, you are risking the safety of your property to the moving provider. Are you provided with any security for your property? What can you do in case of fraud?

There is a Customers’ Bill of Rights which aims to nudge the industry to do more to guard against movers who use “predatory tactics.”  The Customer’s Bill of Rights aims for clients to “identify what they should expect and demand from their movers.”

There has been an onslaught of fraud where criminal enterprises operate under the guise of a moving provider. The police discovered that fraudulent movers would allegedly offer a low price to clients who responded to ads requiring a deposit up front, then, halfway through the job double or even triple the estimate. The movers would hold customers’ belongings ransom in their trucks until the new price was paid. The scammers would also threaten to sue for non-payment or to unload the possessions on the street.

To redeem the reputation of moving companies, the Customer’s Bill of Rights will guarantee that:

  • Customers will be given a written quote outlining the scope and cost per hour of a move, and have both parties’ legal rights and responsibilities explained to them beforehand.
  • Moving providers will adhere to the pre-move estimate and terms provided, while also supplying an itemized invoice upon completion of the move when requested.
  • Customers can request that movers are bonded and properly trained and abide by safety standards.
  • All franchisees of moving providers must carry all necessary insurance.
  • All moving equipment will be in safe working order.
  • Customers will be provided with advance notice of any “unreasonable” delays in pick-up or arrival of goods.
  • Accurate pricing information will be used in advertisements and marketing materials.

Moving companies have been encouraged to put all of these rules in practice. Furthermore, they should offer such guarantees to its customers. The Moving Customer’s Bill of Rights when adopted as a standard will insure the safety and protection of owner’s properties in transit.

Do you know that moving or relocating a home is considered as the third most stressful experiences? Today, people are intimidated on what kind of moving company they will trust their worldly possession with.  Here are helpful tips for people who are planning to make a move of their household goods and personal effects.

By making use of these tips, it will change the quality of your move. They are based on experiences of people who have gone through the work without stress and anxiety.

1 – When you decide to hire a moving company, consider the cost carefully. Doing the moving yourself will not save money for you have the consider costs for insurance and gasoline for the truck, not to mention the value of your efforts. If you want to rent and drive the truck yourself, be sure that it is thoroughly maintained.  Faulty equipment combined with your inexperience as a truck driver can be double jeopardy.

2 – If you decide to rent a mover, make a good selection. Be careful in selecting a mover. Start by asking friends, your local ‘Better Business Bureau and others references.  Deal only with a reputable firm.  Make sure the mover is properly insured.

3 – Your next step is to get written estimates. As a representative to visit your hope so he can see the move and give you the proper estimate. Many movers are aware that a written estimate is legally binding. It is advisable to contact movers at least 2 weeks before the move.

4 – Take time to do a move. Interstate moves are done on large tractor trailers that typically hold 5 or 6 or more different household goods shipment. For a small shipment, determine a specific date requirements for pickup and/or delivery; you have to pay a premium price for this service.

5 – Movers are often busy every end of the month and during summertime. Make your move out of this time. By avoiding these busiest weeks, you will be better off.

6 – The moving company can do packing for you. Pieces of furniture, including televisions, and large electronic items, are blanket padded. There is no charge for this. But you can save money, if you do most or all of your packing yourself. You can leave clothes and linens in dresser drawers so long as it does not leave the dresser too heavy to safely move and the shipment is not going to storage for any length of time.

7 – There are several types of liability coverage which are broken down into   3 basic types. A minimum amount of coverage which is usually provided for free. An actual cash value type coverage and a full replacement type of coverage. Know what type of coverage you want and how much.

8 – You will need to sign this document twice, at both origin and destination. Your driver will sign it as well. At origin, when you sign you are acknowledging the items that were taken and their condition. On destination, you are agreeing you received all the items on the inventory and also to their condition. You could request an inventory and be sure to review this with the driver and have him sign any notations you make regarding damaged or missing items.

9Local moves are usually charged by the hour. The time charged usually includes ‘travel time’ which is the time it takes the move crew to get from their office to your residence, then back to the office after the delivery.

Interstate moves are usually charged by the weight of the shipment although some of the newer companies charge by the cubic foot. Services like the use of elevators and stair carries are charged at an extra rate.

Packing services are usually charged separately, usually at a specific rate for providing each carton and providing the packing labor. You can also tip your mover for a job well done.

10 – Many movers have special deals they can offer you through various organizations you may belong to. If your organization does not have this feature, E-mail me their name, telephone numbers, and person’s name to contact. I will get in touch with them and make this service available.

The decision to move your home will include not only you, your family, and belongings, but also your pets that you consider a family member. Relocation must be smooth and stress–free for every member of your family, including your family pet.

Pets require special care and tending when moving, and the essential requirement for this is preplanning,

The following information outlines the points to consider when relocating with your pet.

v  Preparatory to the  Move

Inquire from the State Veterinarian’s Office or State Department of Agriculture requesting the pet laws and regulations of your destination state. For exotic pets or animals, wolf, monkey, big cat, or any others, you will be required a special permit to keep it.

After you finished with the state regulations, check with the City Clerk’s office in your new community for local pet ordinances.  Many communities have zoning laws that prohibit you from keeping pets such as goats, pigs and chickens in residential areas. Also exotic pets are not allowed in apartment or condo complexes. Make sure you have all these permits before moving in.

With these preparations, you are sure your pet will be allowed in your new community and/or complex. Be sure to bring your pet’s health records from your veterinarian. This record will help your new pet provider better care for your pet.

v  Prior to your departure, make sure you have with you a recent picture of your pet (in case the animal is lost). Have the proper pet documents, such as:

ü  A Health Certificate that is not more than 10 days old. Most states require one for dogs and another for cats and other pets. Your veterinarian or one of the state animal-control agencies will be able to provide you with the information.  Have the certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian, and current inoculation records must accompany it.

ü  You may need to pay for a permit allowing your exotic pet to enter the destination state. Let your vet help you get one. Your veterinarian may assist you in applying for one.

ü  You should provide your pets war a collar with an ID tag secured.  You use leg bands for your birds. The ID tag should include the pet’s name, your name, and the destination address. In addition to ID, most states require dogs, cats and some exotic animals to have a rabies tag on their collar.

v  Selecting the moving method

After making all the necessary preparations as stated, you are properly equipped to relocate your pet but how will you do it? You can have these options:

ü  You can hire a professional pet-moving service to transport your four-legged family member;

ü   Do it yourself.

Moving vans, buses or trains are not allowed to transport animals except seeing- eye- dogs.

If your pet requires special handling when moving, you may consider using a professional pet service. Desert Moving Company & Storage specializes on general delivery and moving needs.

These are myriads of relocation companies available so choosing the right company is another important decision. You have standards for you want to get the best value for your money. If you are having trouble deciding, use this relocation guide and also look at these tips which may help you out:

1. Consider the location – When choosing a relocation company, select one that’s located in your destination country. Why?  You will actually be saving on:

  • An amount of cash on the storage of your goods when they arrive; and
  • Save some money on the actual delivery since an established relocation company often has great connections to deliver your possessions at reduced rates.

A company which isn’t based in your destination will hand over the delivery to a company that is based there. As a result, you will have to pay two companies to get your stuff.

2) Consider the cost – If you really want to economize, save some cash, you should hire the company with lower rate. BUT, you should remember that quality is often sacrificed for lower costs. Make sure that you go over the fine print of the contract and evaluate why their services are so cheap.

These details will prove if the savings are really worth the possible risks of your goods not arriving or in good condition.

3) Consider the speed – You should think hire a company that has a good reputation for quick delivery. You should remember, however, that no relocation company will exert the extra effort to get your goods delivered faster if there isn’t anything in it for them. Speed costs cash and so you might have to pay more.

Your job of choosing the right relocation company is made easier by using these few tips to make moving experience a pleasant one.

Nobody loves moving home from one place to another. But often the time comes when you have to shift your home because it becomes necessary for you to relocate. The process of shifting your home is stressful and extremely tiresome. Although stress level of moving can be lessened by proper planning and by hiring packing & moving services from professional packers and movers in your locality. Nevertheless, most people do not love moving.

These are the five worst part of household moving to a new locality, city or state.

1. Saying goodbye to friends and colleagues. When you relocate, you have to leave friends, co-workers, family members, and neighbors. Leaving people you love, makes you melancholy and even upset. Although you will be gaining new friends or neighbors at your next locale, but old friends are invaluable and unforgettable. But the situation can be alleviated by making regular communication by letters, emails, cards, phones, etc. You can even make time to visit old friends.

2. Departing from your old home or neighborhood become a very sad and upsetting experience. It is a painful task to leave you old home with happy memories and where many memorable events took place. But the move is necessary so you have to prepare accepting your new home with full enthusiasm. You have to learn loving your new home and neighborhood. Feel happy and make your life worthwhile.

3. You have to change school for your children when you move to a new locale. Search the best school for your children. You will also feel their sadness when they have to leave their classmates, teachers and schools behind. To deal with such situation, encourage your children create a scrapbook to have some visual memories with their friends and classmates. You can take group photographs with your classmates and teachers.

4. A big undertaking is to find a new doctor or health care providers in the new locale. Request assistance from your new friends and neighborhood that have more experienced in this venture.

5. If you need extra help at home, this will be another area in your search. You should find one who is loyal, faithful, polite and of good background history. Get referrals from your friends, relatives, neighbors, etc. You must check the background of the extra help you plan to hire.

6. But the worst part of moving is the packing, the carrying, hiring trucks, cancelling all your electrical/phone/gas/internet services, cleaning the old place, cleaning the new place, paying for the new place, redirecting all your mail, the unpacking, the cost (hiring trucks, paying for new place, paying for reconnection of all services).

Both emotional and physical toll make moving an unwelcome experience. However, you can always look at the brighter side: you will be living in a new place, making new friends and perhaps enjoying a new lifestyle. The physical toll can be eliminated when you are able to hire a good moving company.

Whether your reason is a career change, better opportunity, family reasons or personal choice, relocating or moving to a new place is big deal. Let’s admit that is isn’t an easy task but tedious and stressful.  You will need to consider options and will profit by listening to sound advice from moving experts.

Here are 3 easy guidelines in choosing a mover:

ü  Conduct a little research on long distance movers. You can visit consumer review websites to check out what others are saying about their service.

ü  Ask questions to understand how their moving services work; including things like parking, transit times, and how long you have to load/unload.  You can even ask a representative if you do not have a clear picture of your expectations—that’s what they’re for!

ü  Consider amount you pay and the quality of service given. It is true that you get what you pay for but it does not follow that good  service will only be available from the most expensive movers. A good company will move your belongings safely and within a realistic time frame, at a reasonable cost.

Moving experts consider these factors as most important:

1. Your real-estate agent is the best person to help you find a good mover. Although friends and family are always good sources but real estate agents   know the ins and outs of the housing industry and are the most reliable sources.

2. Make company investigation by checking you areas’ Better Business Bureau and local commerce group.

3. Have a representative from the moving company visit your home and physically look at the logistics and what has to be moved. Good companies will spend 20 minutes or more with a potential client answering questions and giving packing tips.

4. Get at least 3 estimates for movers. You will opt to choose what meets your requirements.

5. Have them prepare a contract that covers everything – stating every detail without any hidden charges. Tipping is customary, but down to the level of the customer’s own discretion. Without any contract on the move, there’s no record of sale.

6. Inquire about the claims process. In case of damages, a good mover has a sound claim process whereby you can recover your loss. A reputable company has an internal quality-control department and a contact to help you with your claim.

7. The movers conduct drug tests and background checks for their staff that will enter your home, be responsible for the safety of your property and close contact with your loved ones. With today’s technology, you can get a pretty good insight into a person’s background.”

Bottom of Form

8. Be wary of Internet movers; be sure that they are the right persons you can trust. Unfortunately, the Internet paves an easy way for scam artists to prey on consumers.

9. View the actual trucks used. Are they are clean and well-kept? The condition of the truck is a good indication of how your furniture will be treated.

10. Some companies require a down payment or deposit as high as 25% of the total move. But reputable companies do not require you to pay everything upfront. Nevertheless, with any deposit, consumers should make sure it is refundable, because the closing could always fall through.

Moving experts will advise you to find a company that is reliable and will get your belongings moved safely.

Once you have decided to make that move, you will surely need some useful tips. Moving to another house or place is considered to be the 3rd most stressful event in one’s life. Relax and read through the tips to help you with the activity.

These tips can help you make your move easier and smoother.

No. 1 – Write everything down.

Create a bullet list with ample space to write the contents or use a spiral-bound notebook for the job. Designate a number on every box you pack and write the contents on your list.

No. 2 – Have plenty of packing supplies.

You’ll need LOTS of boxes–probably more boxes than you think, and have about 10 boxes set aside to use for last minute items on moving day. You’ll need strong plastic packing tape to close up the boxes securely.

Use sturdy handled shopping bags for bulky closet items such as shoes, sweaters, belts, and jeans. On moving day, fill the bottom of the wardrobe boxes with some of the shopping bags.

No. 3 – Make use of wardrobe boxes.

Use these tall boxes to store bulky, lightweight items such as comforters, pillows, and blankets, as well as clothes that need to remain hanging. Ask your mover if they can estimate how many wardrobe boxes you will need.

No. 4 – Have moving company deliver boxes ahead of your moving day.

There will be items and boxes that can be delivered ahead. This will give you a bit more space for those last minute boxes that you want to bring with you.

No. 5 – Use color coding

Assign a color for each room in the new home, such as yellow for kitchen, orange for dining room, etc. Paste colored stickers on the box beside the box number. Place a matching sticker on the door to each room so the movers know where to place the boxes as they arrived.

No. 6 – Put things together.

Place related items in one box so it will be easy to find their own place in the new home. Be sure to mark each box with their content.

No. 7 – Advanced packing will lighten the work.

Pack ahead what you are not presently using. Reduce cooking utensils and food supplies to bare essentials. Collect things inside spacious waste baskets while you switch to using plastic grocery bags to collect trash.

No. 8 – Prepare cleaning supplies.

If you must clean your old place after moving out, put together a kit of basic cleaning supplies and rags.

No. 9 – Watch over valued items and carry important papers with you.

Have all your valuable possessions, such as silverware, collections, or antiques, with you. Your list of “important” papers might include: birth certificates, school records, mover estimates, new job contacts, utility company numbers, recent bank records, current bills, phone lists, closing papers, realtor info, maps, and more.

No. 10 – Personal boxes.

Use brightly colored storage tote boxes, one for each person. Let each family member fill theirs with items they’ll want ‘right away’ in the new home.

Moving may not be the most fun you’ve ever had, but planning ahead will make the things simple and you will not be pressured.

It is a fact that the American society is extremely a mobile society. People move frequently. There are two periods in life that makes relocating a common reaction: in the twenties and later in life when the children are married and away on their own.

Some of the reasons that people move are:

  • The house seems too big after the children have their own families or on their own;
  • Wanting the living condition or climate that a resort area offers;
  • An opportunity to enjoy a better lifestyle: good neighborhood or a more spacious home are two reasons that are often cited;
  • The current economic condition requires people in to save money; or
  • Due to foreclosure, forcing moves that were never expected.

Whatever will be the reason, it is prudent to choose the right moving company to insure safety of your property. By selecting the best and most qualified movers, your property is safe and secured.

1. Find out all the options for a moving company. Establish contact with at least 5 moving companies. Get price quotations for comparison of fee charges. Whether moving in-town or across the state, it is advisable to hire movers who are familiar with the area.

2. Meet with the person-in-charge. After you have gone over each free moving quote, schedule an in-person walk-through. This will give the movers an idea of the service expected and an accurate cost assessment. You will have the opportunity to interview each mover. Questions like – Do they sub-contract their work? Do they use 24 ft trucks or trailers? How long they have been in this business? Do they carry the proper DOT (Department of Transportation) license and insurance? Does the moving company provide you with a copy of “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”? Ask for references and other contact information (i.e., website, email address, office address, etc.).

3.  Go over consumer complaints and licensing requirements. You can refer to local commerce group as well as the BBB (Better Business Bureau) to quickly check any consumer complaints.

4. Do not pay cash or large deposit before the move for your security.

5. Inquire what responsibility the movers will take in case of damage. Understand how the moving company will compensate or repair your damaged property.

There are over 8,000 moving companies within the United States so you will be easily overwhelmed. Although the majority of moving companies compete over price, the actual job of any mover is essentially the same regardless of how much is paid.
