Option One – Basic Liability

Inventoried items will be covered at minimum liability, which is .60 per pound per article. To give you a better understanding of what that means is lets say you have a coffee table that is 200lbs and is valued at $5,000. If you just choose the basis insurance and say the coffee table is damaged or lost, then based on the coverage you have through the moving company they would take .60 and multiply it by the weight of the coffee table 200lbs. The replacement value you would most collect is $120.00.  This would not make you feel good if the coffee table was worth $5,000. Note: Weight is determined by the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) Table of Weights. The good thing is you have Desert Moving Company & Storage and over the past 23 years in business, we’ve managed to not have to file one claim. I guess you can say where pretty careful.  Here are some other options, just in case.

Option two – Added insurance (Purchase)

Ÿ   Deductable: All Desert Moving Company & Storage insurance policies have a min $500

Deductible.

Ÿ    Cost: The cost of insurance is $10 for every $1,000 of declared value.

✔   This insurance policy covers the inventory only.

✔   The insurance policy is not an itemized policy.

✔   The policy is based on the actual cash value of your entire

Inventoried shipment.

 

NOTE: Before buying insurance, find out how much your belongings are worth and then purchase accordingly. This will give you a better feeling that all your goods are covered at the total replacement value claimed on the bill of lading. If you underinsure your shipment, you will be subject to a co-insurance penalty that is gone through the Moving Companies insurance policy.  Here is an example, if your claim your shipment to be worth $50,000 and you only purchase $25,000, then the policy will only be responsible for 50% of losses/damages insured.

Choose between the following two insurance options:

 

Actual Cash Value (ACV):

Your property is insured for its actual cash value, after depreciation, based on the AMSA Depreciation Guide. You will be paid the lesser of the following, according to our assessment:

  • The actual cash value at time of loss or damage, after depreciation.
  • The amount of repairing or replacing the property (according to our estimates).
  • The limit of coverage.

Replacement Cost (RC):

Your property is insured for replacement cost. (Please note: in order to receive full replacement cost for an item, it must be damaged beyond repair or confirmed as lost). 
You will be paid the lesser of the following, according to our assessment:

  • The amount of repairing the damage (according to our estimates).
  • The amount it would cost to replace the destroyed or lost property with similar kind or quality to be used for the same purpose and same site (according to our estimates).
  • The limit of coverage.

 

What is not covered:

Loss or damage to jewelry, gem stones, cash, stamps, coin or currency, bank notes, travelers checks, deeds, letters or valuable papers of any kind, coin or stamp collections, photo albums, scrapbooks, negotiable items, perishable articles, firearms, ammunition or contraband.

  • Any internal electrical or mechanical component of any device unless external damages are duly noted in writing at the time of delivery. Loss of data and recalibration are also excluded.
  • Damage to furniture made from pressboard and/or particleboard.
  • Loss or damage consisting of breakage of china, glassware, bottles, statuary, bric-a-brac, or other similar articles of a brittle nature unless property has been packed by the carrier. The carrier is not responsible for the content of boxes packed by the owner.
  • Pairs & Sets: The policy covers only the cost or repair of an individual item damaged, regardless if the item is part of a pair or a set.

You can leave clothes and linens in dresser drawers so long as it does not leave the dresser too heavy to safely move and the shipment is not going to storage for any length of time.

7 – There are several types of liability coverage which are broken down into   3 basic types. A minimum amount of coverage which is usually provided for free. An actual cash value type coverage and a full replacement type of coverage. Know what type of coverage you want and how much.

8 – You will need to sign this document twice, at both origin and destination. Your driver will sign it as well. At origin, when you sign you are acknowledging the items that were taken and their condition. On destination, you are agreeing you received all the items on the inventory and also to their condition. You could request an inventory and be sure to review this with the driver and have him sign any notations you make regarding damaged or missing items.

9 – Local moves are usually charged by the hour. The time charged usually includes ‘travel time’ which is the time it takes the move crew to get from their office to your residence, then back to the office after the delivery.

Interstate moves are usually charged by the weight of the shipment although some of the newer companies charge by the cubic foot. Services like the use of elevators and stair carries are charged at an extra rate.

Packing services are usually charged separately, usually at a specific rate for providing each carton and providing the packing labor. You can also tip your mover for a job well done.

Pets require special care and tending when moving, and the essential requirement for this is preplanning,

The following information outlines the points to consider when relocating with your pet.

v  Preparatory to the  Move

Inquire from the State Veterinarian’s Office or State Department of Agriculture requesting the pet laws and regulations of your destination state. For exotic pets or animals, wolf, monkey, big cat, or any others, you will be required a special permit to keep it.

After you finished with the state regulations, check with the City Clerk’s office in your new community for local pet ordinances.  Many communities have zoning laws that prohibit you from keeping pets such as goats, pigs and chickens in residential areas. Also exotic pets are not allowed in apartment or condo complexes. Make sure you have all these permits before moving in.

With these preparations, you are sure your pet will be allowed in your new community and/or complex. Be sure to bring your pet’s health records from your veterinarian. This record will help your new pet provider better care for your pet.

v  Prior to your departure, make sure you have with you a recent picture of your pet (in case the animal is lost). Have the proper pet documents, such as:

ü  A Health Certificate that is not more than 10 days old. Most states require one for dogs and another for cats and other pets. Your veterinarian or one of the state animal-control agencies will be able to provide you with the information.  Have the certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian, and current inoculation records must accompany it.

ü  You may need to pay for a permit allowing your exotic pet to enter the destination state. Let your vet help you get one. Your veterinarian may assist you in applying for one.

ü  You should provide your pets war a collar with an ID tag secured.  You use leg bands for your birds. The ID tag should include the pet’s name, your name, and the destination address. In addition to ID, most states require dogs, cats and some exotic animals to have a rabies tag on their collar.

v  Selecting the moving method

After making all the necessary preparations as stated, you are properly equipped to relocate your pet but how will you do it? You can have these options:

Packing Tips When Moving

You’ll need LOTS of boxes–probably more boxes than you think, and have about 10 boxes set aside to use for last minute items on moving day. You’ll need strong plastic packing tape to close up the boxes securely.

Use sturdy handled shopping bags for bulky closet items such as shoes, sweaters, belts, and jeans. On moving day, fill the bottom of the wardrobe boxes with some of the shopping bags.
